| Coming Soon: 2002 Year In Review

Greetings from the Shennandoah
Valley! My name's Christian Breeden and I'm the current studio manager
here at biscuit run. My father established this sculpture studio almost
three decades ago. I have had an active working relationship with him for
the last ten years. It's been a real adventure learning to carve under
him. Ask any artist's apprentice, it's no easy task. I've learned to empower
creative people. Now I'm prepared to offer the resources of this region
to YOU!
Below, I have listed the three levels
of sculpture classes. 2002 was my first year offering these, and six beginner
students, two intermediate, and one advanced level sculptor passed through
the studio last year. We have successfully given birth to nine new sculptures;
everyone who took the classes seemed pleased with their results. This year
I want to expand the courses offered to include workshops in stained glass,
and metal work. The stone season will kick off April 1st; classes will
be scheduled to suit student's needs. You can register now. We can
even prepare a custom Program for individual artists or organizations.
If you've never sculpted, I can show
you how. It's easy. If you've never tried soapstone, you must. It's the
finest carving medium on earth. It's soft enough to carve with simple hand
tools, yet dense enough to polish silky smooth. It can last forever.
| We'll
be offering a beginner's class
that comes with the sculptor's tool kit. You can use our power tools to
cut and drill yourpiece. We'll show you a huge array of air tools that
grind and sand. Then comes the fun part: you'll use your hands to sand
it smooth. We'll helpyou pin it, glue it, base, polish buff and wax it.

In
our intermediate level
sessions, students will be provided with about 200 lbs of stone cut specifically
for them, and the flat piece to base it. Carvers will be shown what heavy
machinery can do to stone. Cut it with a diamond bladed chain saw or drill
12' diameter holes with a core bit drill. I'll set you up with a full array
of saws, drills, grinders, and pneumatic air hammers. We'll help you get
the patina, shine and finish you want.

Each
of these classes should include a field trip to the quarry in Schuyler.
There we'll meet the founder of the New World Stone Co. where we'll get
to pick through the scrap piles buy stone in block, slab, or boulder form. |
I
have a program in mind for the advanced sculptor.
If you've ever dreamt of having a body of work in stone, then you should
spend a summer in Virginia. Maybe you want to make some water fountains
to take on a craft show circuit or do your first public monument. Get in
touch with me, and we'll see what you need to make your sculpture happen.
